The independent body that issues guidelines on sentencing, the Sentencing Council, is issuing new sentencing guidelines that would have judges take offenders' race and faith into account. Some regard this as two-tier sentencing biased especially against white males. The justice secretary has expressed disapproval but the Council persists with their guidelines. The government could accept the guidelines, legislate to change them or even scrap rhe Council and the guidelines as well.
